As we’ve been discussing this week, the biggest hindrance to the health and well being of the modern skeptic is often modern medicine itself. Funny thing is, it seems it has always been that way, Most of the skeptics I hold in high esteem also had their doubts as to the benefits of Physicians and their craft. As with all my skepticism, my opinion of the medical profession is based a lot on personal experience. I’m not sure if it was having to break three bones in my foot again because the first doctor didn’t set the bones before … Continue reading →
There, I feel better. I always seem to after a Witless Wednesday rant. Despite the tone of this week’s topic; I am, and remain fond of most kids. It’s rare for me to meet a child I do not like. They are the only thing keeping me from becoming a complete misanthrope these days. What set me off this week I suppose: a child old enough to know better, easily in the middle of his second hand, throwing a tantrum right in front of me as I was shopping. A screaming hissy fit right in the middle of the aisle. … Continue reading →
First, I’d like to wish a Happy Pi Day to all of you. After looking at some rather disturbing irrational numbers out of Washington this week, it’s nice to be reminded of one of the good ones. And in what I find to be one of the coolest coincidences of the calendar, today is also the Birthday of Albert Einstein. I use Albert as a source often, I’m still a big fan. So many of our problems these days are caused when we confuse knowledge with wisdom; just like when we confuse fame with achievement, and celebrity with talent. There … Continue reading →
All right, I feel better. I got the rant off my chest. As much as I railed at the President yesterday, there is enough blame to cover the entire swamp of Washington. Sometimes you look at what we’re paying for what we’re getting with our politics, and you need to vent. I feel better, still peeved, but better. The winds have calmed down, sun is out. Took the morning to have coffee with the cardinals. I needed that. They reminded me of a few things. I was able to get my hands in the dirt, coax a snapdragon from under … Continue reading →
What a week, what a month. But the end is in sight. We’ve made it to Thursday. After a long week, most of us are beat-up; physically and mentally. Wounds of the flesh heal reasonably fast, a balm or salve offers quick relief. Wounds to the spirit take a bit more nursing. When your insides hurt more than your outsides, then you need a quick dose of; Have you ever noticed that on Thursday, people’s attitudes start to improve and their outlook brightens? A spring returns to their steps, a song starts to be sung again in their heart. … Continue reading →
Still plodding, still plugging. I’m trying to get the last pieces in place. I can’t believe it’s all ready Thursday. You know what kind of week you are having by how you feel about Thursday. If you’re panicking about it, you’re probably not having a good week; I’m going through the images I’ve done, and thought today I would share a few that gave me a giggle this morning. I don’t know yet if they are actually funny, or I’ve been staring at the screen too much. So, with no rhyme or reason, and in no particular order; Now that … Continue reading →
Today marks the birthday of Marcus Aurelius, the last of the Five Good Emperors of Rome. He is perhaps best known as being the most eloquent definer of Stoicism; the belief that all the answers to life are to be found within. That a good life can only be found by understanding and following the laws of the natural world. To me, Marcus Aurelius represents the glory of Rome at its finest moment, a true Philosopher King as defined by Aristotle. That’s probably because I’m pretty much a stoic myself, according to the wife. That’s okay, I’m fine with that. … Continue reading →
One of the most influential things some one said to me was that if the idea you are writing about is too complicated for grown-ups, then write it for children. Not only did that advice change the way I write, but got me looking at all children’s writing in a new way. I’ve found out that the simplest words are sometimes the hardest to write. It seems like that’s an old practice; Sometimes, the simplest words hide the deepest thoughts. And just for a giggle today; Have a great day.
Finishing up the first chapter of Jenna’s second-hand story, and it seems to have put a touch of magic in the air. If you know how to look for it. I still believe magic is everywhere, you just have to look for it. Most people quit looking. That’s why they don’t see it, or worse, believe to be only a children’s story. Have a Magical Day. For your amusement; The first post from Jenna’s Story has been posted here; A Second-Hand Wish
Today is the anniversary of awesome. Today is the birthday of William Shatner. To simply say he played Captain Kirk on a TV Series, would be a complete disservice to his awesomeness. I was one of the original trekkies. I sat in front of the TV every week waiting for the adventures of the USS Enterprise and its intrepid captain. When the show was cancelled, I went on to other boyhood pursuits. But the phenomena that was Star Trek went on without me. As for Shatner, there were other series, other characters and shows. I could never understand the Trekkies … Continue reading →
Did you hear that? I didn’t either. I woke up, and silently poured a cup of coffee. Sipped the coffee on the porch, with nothing but the muffled warbling of a few cardinals for a soundtrack. After a five day visit, the kids must be gone. There is nothing this morning to disturb the quiet. Coffee in the garden and silence, delicious silence. Life must be returning to normal. A second cup of coffee, a quick smoke, and silence. I made it to the deck without having to step through a minefield of toys, dirty clothes and sleeping children. Did … Continue reading →
Some days you just have to face the facts; accept reality for what it is. Or for what it is not. Wishing something was so, doesn’t make it so. That takes work. Dreams do not come true without effort and dedication. That’s a fact. And just to leave you laughing today; And to sum up how I feel this morning; Have a great day, for real.
